Planning a residential: advice from Learning Away schools

Key features

  • Planning residentials
  • Planning low-cost models
  • Planning for curriculum integration

Brilliant residentials are planned with students’ specific learning needs as the starting point.

This focus is different from more traditional school residentials, where the planning has generally begun from questions such as ‘Where are we going?’ and ‘What activities are on offer?’.

The action research evidence from the first phase of Learning Away showed that residentials have the greatest impact when they are fully integrated with the curriculum and are planned by school staff – and, where possible, students.

In this film, staff from Bulwell and Canterbury partnerships who have been involved in residentials over a number of years give tips and advice about how to plan them.
