Learning Away Consortium Member Vacancies (Voluntary Roles)

Could you help the Learning Away Consortium achieve its vision to improve outcomes for children and young people, by ensuring every child has access to and benefits from high quality residential learning experiences?

Do you have knowledge, experience and access to networks in relation to residential learning experiences in one of the following settings: arts and culture; farming; heritage; school grounds; science and discovery; or school travel?

About Learning Away

Learning Away started life as a Paul Hamlyn Foundation special initiative in 2009. Since then we have worked closely with 60 primary, secondary and special schools to demonstrate the positive impact that high-quality residential learning can have on children, young people and schools.  Through this action research project, we have gathered powerful and compelling evidence about the transformative impact school trips with an overnight stay can have on everyone involved.

About Brilliant Residentials

As a result of this action research we have a clear picture of what we mean by high-quality residential learning, and have coined the phrase ‘Brilliant Residentials’ to describe these experiences.

Brilliant Residentials do not need to be expensive, and can be delivered through a wide variety of opportunities (e.g. arts and cultural experiences, fieldwork, heritage, outdoor adventurous activities, school grounds,) as part of a progressive programme of experiences.

Consortium members are united in their commitment to ensuring that every child and young person has access to high-quality ‘Brilliant Residential’ learning experiences.

The purpose of the Consortium is:

  1. To promote and champion residential learning to enable all children and young people in educational and youth settings across the UK to benefit from these experiences.
  2. To tackle the challenges highlighted in recent evidence that suggests children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to take part in residential learning experiences.
  3. To provide practical support to schools and providers to enable more effective and high quality residential experiences.
  4. To be the leading voice for residential learning across the UK.
  5. To ensure a lasting legacy for the PHF Learning Away programme.

About you

We are currently looking for new Consortium members to help make our vision a reality. We are particularly keen hear from you if you can add knowledge, expertise and access to networks in relation to residential learning experiences in one of the following settings:

  • Arts/cultural
  • Farming
  • Heritage
  • School grounds
  • School travel

You will need to:

  • Show a commitment and dedication to the vision of Learning Away
  • Be in attendance at four meetings per year arranged at accessible locations around the UK (meetings typically last three hours)

This might particularly interest you if you are:

  • A provider of residential learning experiences representing one of the settings above
  • From a representative / umbrella body within one of the sectors mentioned
