Congratulations to Neston High School in Chester and Kirk Ella Primary School in Hull who have been recognised as Learning Away ‘Champion Schools’, for providing their pupils with ‘Brilliant Residential’ experiences.

At Neston High School the school’s governors and senior leadership team have instilled an ethos that encourages the development of residentials across the entire curriculum which supports their students’ learning with inspiring experiences.

Kirk Ella Primary School’s residential programme is a progressive one, in which pupils have the opportunity to experience three affordable overnight educational visits away from home in Year 2/3, Year 4 and again in Year 6. Their Year 6 trip won ‘The Best School Trip Award” at the 2016 School Travel Awards. You can hear the lead teacher, Ian Wood who is the Sports & Educational Visits Coordinator at Kirk Ella Primary School and responsible for the residential programme speak at the CLOtC Conference on 16 November 2017.

We know there are many more schools providing high-quality residential experiences. We want to officially recognise all those schools striving for their residentials to fulfil the Brilliant Residentials criteria and share their good practice. Read more about how to become a Champion School here.

We will be forever indebted to the Learning Away coordinators and participating staff at all the partner schools who engaged in the first phase of the Learning Away action research. We are delighted so many of these schools continue to champion ‘Brilliant Residentials’.
